Your most important job as a manager

If you’re a people manager, your most important job is growing your team and helping your superstars grow.

How can you make sure you excel at this?

Here’s what to do according to Kim Malone Scott, author of “Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity”, former Director at Google, former Advisor at Qualtrics and who was once offered to interview for the role of CEO at Twitter:

  1. Challenge them and make sure they’re constantly learning.
  2. Give them new opportunities.
  3. Figure out what the next job for them might be.
  4. Build a partnership with them.
  5. Find mentors for them.

What does Kim say to avoid at all costs?

(When managing others) “don’t ever squash them or block them. You’ll be lucky to work alongside them again someday, maybe even work for them.”
